Accurate diagnosis in eye diseases depends on accurate measurement. Especially in premium lens planning, precision in biometry and corneal topography measurements directly affects the surgical outcome. Below is a summary of the devices used at our clinic and their purpose.
The Importance of Measurement
Every device used in an eye examination produces numerical or visual data about a particular structure or function of the eye. This data alone is not meaningful; the physician reaches a diagnosis by evaluating the patient's complaint, the examination findings and the measurements from these devices together.
This is particularly evident in premium lens (multifocal, toric, EDOF) planning. Calculating intraocular lens power requires micron-level accuracy in measuring corneal curvature (topography) and intraocular distances (biometry). A small deviation in measurement can lead to a deviation from the predicted post-operative visual acuity. For this reason, the physician's experience in interpreting the measurement is as important as the technical properties of the device.
Imaging and Retina Devices
Optovue OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
OCT is a non-contact imaging method that uses infrared light to obtain micron-level cross-sectional images of the retinal layers and the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness. Thinning, thickening or fluid accumulation in the retinal layers is detected with this device. It is used to monitor optic nerve fibre loss in glaucoma, to assess subretinal fluid and macular thickness in age-related macular degeneration, and to follow up macular oedema in diabetic retinopathy.

A fundus camera takes colour photographs of the back of the eye (retina, optic disc, blood vessels). In fluorescein angiography (FFA), a special dye injected into the arm is tracked through the retinal vessels using sequential photographs. This method is used to show vessel leakage, blockage or new vessel formation. It is a frequently used test in the diagnosis and treatment planning of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

Zeiss Humphrey Computerised Visual Field Device
The visual field device measures the patient's ability to perceive light stimuli in their peripheral field of vision while focusing on a fixed point. The test result produces a map of any narrowing or scotomas (blind spots) in the visual field. It is used regularly to detect and monitor over time the functional counterpart of optic nerve damage in glaucoma — visual field loss.
Glaucoma (Eye Pressure)Sonomed Ultrasonic Biometry and Pachymetry Device
Ultrasonic biometry measures intraocular distances using sound waves; measuring corneal thickness is called pachymetry. Corneal thickness is important for the correct interpretation of eye pressure; the pressure value measured by a tonometer can be interpreted differently in a thick or thin cornea. This device is used as a complementary measurement tool in glaucoma assessment.
Glaucoma (Eye Pressure)Canon Pneumatic (Air-Puff) Tonometer
A pneumatic tonometer measures eye pressure without contact by delivering a brief puff of air to the cornea. It is a rapid screening method that does not require anaesthetic drops. It is used as a first-line measurement when raised eye pressure is suspected; if needed, it is confirmed with more precise contact tonometry methods.
Glaucoma (Eye Pressure)Laser Systems
Ellex YAG Laser (including SLT)
A YAG laser is used to create a precisely defined, controlled effect in tissue. In selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) mode, it is applied to the eye's fluid drainage channels to help lower eye pressure. The same system is also used for capsulotomy, performed when the membrane (capsule) behind the intraocular lens becomes cloudy after cataract surgery.

The argon laser is a laser system that creates controlled, pinpoint burns in the retinal tissue via a heat effect, causing tissue fusion. Keratron Scout Corneal Topography
Corneal topography maps the surface curvature of the cornea, the eye's outer transparent layer, point by point to produce a colour map. This map shows irregularities and thinning areas of the cornea. It is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of keratoconus progression, in determining the pattern of astigmatism, and in calculating toric lens power before premium lens surgery.

Optical biometry uses light technology to measure the eye's axial length, anterior chamber depth and corneal curvature with high precision and without contact. Plusoptix Paediatric Autorefractor
Plusoptix is a screening device that can measure the refractive error and eye alignment of both of a child's eyes remotely and without contact within a few seconds. As standard examination cooperation can be difficult in young children, this device is a useful tool for the early screening of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and the risk of lazy eye.

A device that automatically measures the eye's refractive error (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism) and corneal curvature, providing a starting value for determining glasses prescription.
Topcon Ophthalmic Unit
The central system of the examination room, integrating the examination chair, slit lamp, phoropter and visual acuity chart.
Topcon Digital Phoropter
A device used to determine the lens combination that provides the clearest vision by placing lenses of varying power in front of the patient's eye, i.e. determining the glasses prescription.
Topcon Digital Visual Acuity Chart
A digital chart that measures visual acuity (sharpness of vision) by displaying letters, numbers or shapes of various sizes on a screen.
Nikon Biomicroscope (Slit Lamp)
The slit lamp is a fundamental examination device that uses a thin beam of light and a magnifying optical system for detailed examination of the eyelid, eyelashes, cornea, anterior chamber, iris and lens.
Optika Anterior Segment Imaging and Recording System
Allows photographic or video recording of the front part of the eye (cornea, conjunctiva, iris) during slit lamp examination, enabling comparison of findings over time.
